My Thoughs About Red & White Day
The following weeks have really shown me the true spirit within York IS U. I have never felt so proud of my school and the people in it and I believe that Red & White Day is crucial in creating this sense of pride.
In my journey with York Is U the first taste of the strength in the spirit of students at York I received was during York Is U’s Spirit Gatherings. We had many amazing Spirit Ambassadors come out during this event who assisted in spreading the York U spirit throughout campus. The ambassadors talked about Red & White Day to fellow students, handed out promotional flyers, and in turn, the students really got into the “York Lion” mindset. The Spirit Ambassador shifts would be tiring, but the Spirit Ambassadors did not lose any enthusiasm through the course of the shift. They truly inspired me in the development of my school spirit. Here’s a Facebook album with really great pictures from this initiative: Click Me…Please :D
Of course the Spirit Gatherings were building up to the big day, Red & White Day! On the 27th of November, York showed it’s love throughout the school by holding various initiatives.During the festivities I was helping run the York Is U Twitter contest in which we gave out awesome York Is U umbrellas! It was awesome seeing everyone participate in the contest, which required you to show off your pride to enter for a chance to win an umbrella. York Is U also ran a button making station and the Pride-ometer. The Pride-ometer was one of my favourite initiatives during Red & White Day. The idea was for everyone to write down a reason why they love York and help fill up a large empty YU on a giant poster. Th At the end of the day we had 40 happy winners.I had to stay in the Vari Hall during the Spirit Rally in the Student Center, but from what I hear it was amazing. There was a spirit competition, prizes given away, and dance performances. Also on Red & White Day YFS was giving out delicious food, the bookstore had amazing discounts, and the York Lions gave out some awesome water bottles in Vari Hall!
